Red snapper season opens for recreational harvest in the state and federal waters in October.

The federal season will be one week shorter this year than the 21-day state season. Federal waters begin nine nautical miles offshore in Florida.

This year’s season was shortened after catch estimates for June came in much higher than expected.

Stock is still healthy and catch limits for snapper are the highest they have been since quotas were set in 1991.

There was also a large increase in the allowable catch for Gulf red snapper, from 8.46 million pounds to eleven million pounds. The recreational quote increased from 4.145 to 5.39 million pounds

Fishermen are worried about fishing this year and they don’t want to put next year’s season at risk. Only time will tell.
