With Tropical Storm Erika headed our way, Gov. Scott declared a state of emergency for Florida. Hurricane season is upon us, and having a plan can make a big difference. Experts recommend preparing a kit of basic disaster supplies, including the following:
Water: A good rule of thumb is one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days. This allows plenty of water for drinking and sanitation.
Food: Gather a three-day supply of non-perishable food. Don’t forget the manual can opener!
Cash: if the power goes out, banks may be closed and ATM’s won’t work. Go to the bank before the storm hits and make sure you have enough cash to cover incidentals and emergency expenses.
Household chlorine beach: Bleach can be used as a disinfectant (nine parts water to one part bleach), or used to treat water for drinking (16 drops of regular bleach per gallon of water). Do not use color-safe, scented, or bleach with added cleansers.
Radio: Include a battery-powered radio and extra batteries.
First Aid Kit: In an emergency situation, even minor injuries can be a serious complication. Gather basic first aid supplies like bandages, alcohol, peroxide, tweezers and pain-relievers.
